The Stoics vs. St James Montefiore 21st July 2014
It was a hot sunny day in East Sussex at the picturesque ST James ground.
Stoics won the toss and decided to bat on what was a surprisingly green top.
Akeem Jordan and Ben West opened the batting. Ben was caught out in the second over having played early to a short one outside the off stick and smacked it straight to cover who took a stunning catch. 12 for 1. Akeem was joined by Dominic Sear stayed with him for another 6 overs negotiating the variable bounce and slow pace off the wicket.
37 for 2 Akeem’s patience in waiting for the ball was the saving factor at this point. Colin Mansfield came to the wicket and his experience showed as he led the score to 101 when Akeem (54) fell in the 22nd over. Various contributions were made to take the Stoics to a total of 175 all out in the 48th over. The wicket played as badly as it had seemed it would from it’s appearance, so the feeling in the pavilion was that the total would still take some getting.
St James opened with Sam Cooper and Mali Richards son of the great Viv. The secret weapon of the Stoics, Stan Woolliscroft showed that his leg spin was as tricky as the spelling of his name. Bowling Richards in his first over with a ball that most certainly would have troubled his father, Viv as well. Not only did it turn but it never got more that 2 inches off the ground. Apart from a superb 60 by Cooper wickets steadily tumbled and after 30 overs gone and St James needed 47 of the last 20 overs back came the Wonder Kiwi, Woolliscroft bowling 6 overs 4 for 19 to take his total to a jug. The remaining 2 St James’ batsmen fell to, Meader with his first delivery, and then being told not to take any more, so as to give Telford a chance. He duly obliged with his first over bringing them to 164 all out and a Stoics victory by 11 runs. A great day was had by all with a superb lunch and tea prepared by Derek Pickering (St James’ President ) and his wife.
Proper declaration cricket played in the right spirit albeit on a not–so-good track.
