Ditchling v The Stoics C.C. Stoics CC on Tue 10 Aug 2010 at 11.30am
Match was Abandoned
Match report
Stoics travelled to Ditchling as the rain loomed and slowly began to drizzle as we made our way over the South Downs, upon arrival the covers were on and the opposition were already making there way through a pint or two, After speaking with the captain, James, Stoics players quickly joined them in being social and downing 1 or 2 themselves.
As the rain stopped it was decided that an early lunch was in order but not before a quick competition of who had the best arm, both left and right handed, Stoics won both with Ajaz Patel and Turusha, but not before a Ditchling player ended up on his backside covered in mud and water after slipping over.....
A superb Lunch put on by the Ditchling Ladies, washed down with a glass of port or two and a couple of light hearted speeches with both captains toasting Gerald was had and a decision to try and play a T20 game was made.
Ditchling won the toss and very kindly with a little light hearted persuasion put us in to bat, conditions were damp and Brendan McCormack and Bob Mayston walked out, As the rains fell and Bob glasses steamed up he managed to glove a single after a bouncer which almost took his head off, Bob had previously talked up that he did not need a helmet because he would use his bat....
Wickets fell at constant intervals but with the batting of Mike Chapman (37) holding the innings together and West (10) Mcormack (13), and Turusha (13) chipping in with double figures Stoics managed a par score of 102 for 9 off 20 overs.
Ditchling openers Walsh & Edgell started well and aggressively attacked seamer Stuart Ketley, driving and cutting with aplomb and were well ahead of the rate, Cedric Corray from the other end was very tight (0 for 8 off 4 overs) and with the introduction of Patel (2-19 off 4) Stoics clawed themselves back into the game, Bowers who was equally as tight (0 for 10 off 2 overs) were getting ahead of the game, but as the rain got harder and the wind coming from all angles the game was abandoned to protect the pitch and the players for the rest of the Ditchling Cricket week with Ditchling 59 for 2 off 12 overs -it would have been a close finish but an honourable draw was declared and the players returned to the pavilion for a great tea and more drinks.
A good day had by all, thanks to Ditchling for trying to get a game in and very much look forward to next year.
