Jack Hyams passes

04 May 2012

Dear Members,

I am sure that this news will have reached some of you on the great cricket grapevine of Facebook for those in the 21c!

However it is my sad duty to report the passing of another Club cricket great, I have faithfully copied an email from Charlie Puckett.

'Subject: Jack Hyams

Cast once again as the harbinger of doom, I have to advise you that Jack Hyams has died at the ripe old age of 92.

Jack was still playing until about six years ago - indeed, I saw him almost take a catch in the slips down by his ankle in a match for Cross Arrows on the Nursery Pitch that year (some of us have forgotten what our ankles look like!) - and had taken up umpiring to prolong his career.

Jack was a lovely chap and was never knowinglingly undersold!  Within a fairly short time of meeting him, you would know how many runs and centuries he had scored (at the last count it was way over 100,000 runs and 136 hundreds).  Despite the foregoing, he really was a good man and excellent company - and he really could play!  He played for many clubs: amongst them Stoics, Finchley, Mill Hill Village, AP, MCC and Cross Arrows and anywhere else he could get a game.

I will send you funeral details when they are to hand.

Charlie'

Kind regards

Chris Heron
